FAQ

From time to time we receive emails asking about the club, and we are always happy to help and try to get back to people as soon as possible.

Many people who are considering joining our club are completely new to the whole athletics club scene, and so it is understandable that they will have lots of questions and concerns, How long do you train? Where do you meet? Will I be too slow? etc, so we have posted some of the most common questions and answers here for you to take a look at, however if the question you have is not here please get in touch (details on the contact page) we will always try our best to help.

Q. Can I just turn up then and take part?

A. Yes, you don’t need to book in! Just turn up ask around for one of the Itchen Spitfire Run Leaders who will have a brief chat to find out what ability you currently have and advise you on what group would be best for you to start in, everyone is really friendly and it will seem like everyone is chatting amongst themselves but don’t worry you will soon be part of the Itchen Spitfires RC family.

If you are thinking of joining us then please feel free to come along and train with us for two taster sessions, this way you will get the chance to sample what have to offer and make sure that  you experience the different sessions we have to offer, we have runners of all abilities and we welcome everyone to run with us, after this you will need to join.

Q. I am already a member at another club, but you are closer to me, can I run with you?

A. Yes you can, you can always use us as a second claim club.

Q. Do I need to get fit before I come along?

A.  It is also recommend that if you cannot yet run a 5k that you join our beginners sessions

Q. Do you have male & female members?

A. Yes we welcome both Male and Female members, and have a good friendly spirit around the club so regardless of gender we are all Spitfires!

Q. How much is it to join? what’s Uk Affiliation?

A. We have membership options available, When renewing your membership, you will need to consider whether you also want to affiliate to English Athletics at an additional £12.00 per person.
There are no discounts for family members, though not everybody in the family will need to affiliate.

There are two good reasons for wanting to affiliate to a running organisation…. one is for insurance reasons and the other to allow ourselves to run in their races.

The other issue is to allow ourselves to complete in the races we want to and at the cheapest entry fee possible.
To do this, most 1st claim members of the club will need to affiliate to English Athletics. These members will have to pay the current English Athletics membership fee, which at the moment is £12.00.
There is no point in affiliating to English Athletics at £12.00 a time if you don’t need to.
Nor should those who don’t need to affiliate to EA subsidise those who do need to affiliate.

So the question is, who needs to affiliate?
For most the decision will be straight forward.
Any second claim members should affiliate with their first claim club if necessary.
If you are a social (non-running) member of the club, or only turn up at training sessions, then you do not need to affiliate.

If you run in the Hampshire Cross Country League or any championship events (road or cross country e.g), then you do need to affiliate in order to participate.

We will be entering events as a club that only affiliated Athletes can enter, we would urge you to go with this option

Q. What time & days does the club meet?

A. We meet every Monday & Thursday, Sessions start at 6:45pm so we ask that you arrive as early as possible. Sessions normally last around 1 hour. Our meeting place is Woolston Millenium Garden, Bridge Road, Southampton SO19 9RH

Q. What is the purpose of the club?

A. The club serves several purposes, running with others provides safety in numbers and training in a social environment  and can provide encouragement and competition for those that want to be competitive.

The club exists to improve the health & well being of our members, many of our members join to get fit, lose weight, be social,  train for a race and many just to have fun!

Q. What equipment do I need?

A. This is a really common question, the great thing about running is it is a really cheap form of keeping fit, all you really need is some suitable clothing i.e Shorts T-Shirt and some running trainers, for those that are new to running come along and try it out, but if you like it and start to increase the time you spend running we would recommend that you visit a running shop  to receive a gait analysis which will determine the correct style of shoe for your feet.

Q. But I cant run, do you have beginner groups

A. Yes we periodically run beginners groups throughout the year, the course last 9 weeks and will take you from non runner to a 5k run/race at the end of the term after which we would then hopefully move you into our Thursday groups, there is a very small charge for our beginners  but all proceeds go towards club funds.
